Abstract

The compilation of Hadith is regarded as one of the most remarkable intellectual and religious achievements in Islamic history, as it ensured the preservation of the sayings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for future generations. During the era of the Rashidun Caliphate, the preservation of Hadith primarily relied upon memorization, oral transmission, and limited written manuscripts maintained by the Companions. The Rightly Guided Caliphs adopted a cautious attitude toward the narration of Hadith to protect the authenticity of Prophetic traditions and to prevent the circulation of fabricated or inaccurate reports. This careful approach reflected the deep concern of the early Muslim community for safeguarding the original teachings of Islam alongside the preservation of the Holy Qur’an. As the Islamic empire expanded during the Umayyad period, the Muslim community encountered new political, social, intellectual, and theological challenges that increased the need for systematic documentation of Hadith. The emergence of sectarian divisions, political conflicts, and fabricated narrations motivated scholars to establish principles for verification, authentication, and transmission. Consequently, the science of Hadith criticism and the evaluation of narrators gradually developed into organized scholarly disciplines. The contributions of eminent scholars and governors during this period, particularly the initiatives of Caliph Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, played a decisive role in encouraging the official collection and written preservation of Hadith literature. His efforts laid the foundation for the later comprehensive compilations produced by classical Muhaddithun. This study provides a scholarly and research-based analysis of the historical development of Hadith compilation during the Rashidun and Umayyad periods. It critically examines the methodologies, challenges, scholarly contributions, and intellectual trends associated with the preservation of Hadith, while also highlighting their enduring significance for Islamic jurisprudence, theology, and the preservation of Sunnah in the broader framework of Islamic scholarship.
